Project Overview

Cleaner Air for an Active Welding Shop

Skeer System's facility in Berthierville, Quebec required a dedicated welding fume extraction solution. With no prior capture system in place, the shop was looking for the best approach to protect their welders and improve overall air quality. After careful evaluation, two FlexHood units were selected and installed by local contractor Turcotte Réfrigération, delivering immediate and measurable improvements to the working environment.

Challenge & Solution

Choosing the Right Capture
Strategy for the Shop

The Challenge

Source Capture Arms vs. Hoods

The client was initially undecided between source capture extraction arms and overhead hood units. The welding zones needed careful evaluation — it became clear that the areas where welding occurred were not well-suited to arm-based capture, which would have provided insufficient coverage and performance for their specific workflow.

Our Solution

2× FlexHood (1.5m × 3m) with TEV Fan

Following an in-depth evaluation and consultation, two FlexHood units (each 1.5m × 3m) equipped with TEV fans were selected as the ideal solution. The hoods provide wide-area coverage directly over the welding zones, ensuring thorough fume capture without constraining welder movement.

Site Evaluation & System Selection

A thorough evaluation of the welding zones was conducted to determine the most effective capture method. Source capture arms were considered but ruled out in favour of overhead hoods based on the shop layout and welding patterns.

Installation Completed

Turcotte Réfrigération completed the installation of both FlexHood units with TEV fans at end of November. The facility had no prior fume extraction system, making this a greenfield installation from the ground up.

Follow-Up & Welder Feedback

After approximately three months in operation, the client confirmed welders working under the hoods are very satisfied. The team even added personal lighting to brighten the hood area, and the shop has seen a clear improvement in welding fume levels.

Challenges & Resolution

Finding the Best Path Forward

The primary challenge was not installation complexity but rather identifying the right extraction strategy for the specific welding environment. A consultative approach led to a confident final decision.

Zone Evaluation

The welding areas were assessed in detail to understand movement patterns and fume behaviour, making it clear that source capture arms alone would not provide adequate coverage.

Consultative Decision

Through collaborative discussion and a structured evaluation, the client gained confidence that two overhead FlexHood units were the superior solution for their workflow.

Seamless Installation

With the solution confirmed, Turcotte Réfrigération completed the installation without incident. No additional challenges arose during the install process.

The client has already seen an improvement in the shop regarding welding fumes — and their welders are very satisfied. They are even willing to serve as a reference and welcome companies to visit and see the system in action.

Outcome

A Cleaner Shop,
Satisfied Welders

Within three months of installation, Skeer System has observed a noticeable improvement in welding fume levels throughout the shop. The welders operating under the FlexHood units have expressed strong satisfaction with the system, and even took the initiative to add personal lighting to further enhance their workspace beneath the hoods.

The client is fully operational and has seen the value of the solution firsthand — with no performance data required to confirm what the welders experience every day.

Skeer System is willing to act as a reference site for Plymovent, welcoming other companies to visit the facility and see the FlexHood system running in a real production environment.
