Project Overview

Diluter Systems for a Major Shipyard Fabrication Shop

Seaspan Victoria Shipyards — one of Canada's leading marine repair and shipbuilding facilities — required a fume extraction solution for their plate fabrication shop. Two Diluter SCS Series systems were installed to manage welding fumes generated during heavy fabrication work, delivering measurable air quality improvement to the shop environment and the workers within it.

Challenge & Solution

Heavy Fabrication Demands
Reliable Fume Control

The Challenge

Plate Fabrication Shop Fume Levels

The plate fabrication shop at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards involves continuous heavy welding activity, generating significant volumes of welding fumes. The facility required a dependable extraction system scaled to the demands of an active shipyard environment, where air quality directly affects worker health and productivity.

Our Solution

2× Diluter SCS Series Systems

Two Diluter SCS Series systems were selected and installed in the plate fabrication shop. The SCS Series is purpose-built for high-volume industrial environments, providing effective dilution and extraction of welding fumes across large work areas without interrupting the fabrication workflow.

Installation Day — Wiring Issue Identified

Both Diluter SCS Series units were installed on site. During commissioning, it was discovered that the power wiring to the main control panel had been connected incorrectly, causing the panel fuse to blow.

Day

Fuses Replaced, Wiring Corrected

The client's own electrician corrected the wiring and replaced the blown fuses on the same day. The system was recommissioned successfully, with no further electrical issues encountered.

Systems Running — Air Quality Improving

Both Diluter SCS systems are operating as intended. The client has confirmed that the systems are working fine and that air quality improvement in the plate fabrication shop is already noticeable.

Challenges & Resolution

One Wiring Issue,
Resolved the Same Day

The installation was straightforward overall. A single electrical issue arose during commissioning — identified immediately and corrected on-site without any lasting impact on the project timeline.

Incorrect Power Wiring

The power wiring to the main control panel was connected incorrectly during initial setup, causing the fuse to blow when the system was first powered on.

Client Electrician on Hand

Seaspan's own electrician was available on site and corrected the wiring fault promptly. New fuses were fitted and the panel was restored to full operation without delay.

Same-Day Resolution

The issue was diagnosed, corrected, and the system fully recommissioned on the same day as installation. No return visits were required and no project timeline impact occurred.

Outcome

Cleaner Air in an Active
Shipyard Fabrication Shop

Both Diluter SCS Series systems are now fully operational at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards. The plate fabrication shop is experiencing measurable air quality improvement — a meaningful outcome in a high-intensity welding environment where worker health and visibility are critical.

The single electrical issue encountered during commissioning was resolved by the client's own electrician on the same day, with no lasting impact on the installation timeline or system performance.

Seaspan Victoria Shipyards is one of Canada's most active marine fabrication facilities. Successfully deploying two Diluter SCS Series systems in this environment demonstrates the scalability and reliability of the solution for heavy-duty industrial applications.
