What Does a Welding Fume Extractor Do?

A welding fume extractor is a ventilation system designed to capture contaminated air generated during welding and move it away from the worker's breathing zone. Source Capture

Why Capture Welding Fume at the Source?

The concentration of welding fume is typically highest close to the welding operation. Capturing contaminated air near the source can reduce the opportunity for the fume plume to enter the welder's breathing zone or disperse throughout the shop.

This principle is known as source capture.

Extraction arms are one of the most common ways to accomplish source capture. The arm allows the operator to position the hood close to the welding area while maintaining access to the workpiece.

Where Should the Extraction Arm Be Positioned?

An extraction hood should be positioned close enough to the welding plume to capture the fume without interfering with the welding process.

If the hood is moved too far away, capture effectiveness decreases and more airflow is required. If it is positioned incorrectly, the plume can pass through the welder's breathing zone before reaching the extractor.
